About

OCC (formerly known as Oklahoma Committee for Conscientious Objectors) was founded in 2004 and is supported by Joy Mennonite Church, Veterans for Peace of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Catholic Peace Fellowship, the Oklahoma City Religious Society of Friends and Eastern Oklahoma Pax Christi.

OCC is a non-governmental organization funded by community donations and private grants.

Mission

Our mission statement is currently under review and a revised version will be posted once it is approved. Our original mission statement does not reflect all of our concerns and projects.

OCC works to promote and support the rights of conscientious objectors. We are a group of volunteers from various backgrounds and beliefs who seek an end to war and warmaking and the establishment of nonviolence and cooperation as the cornerstone of a just society.

OCC formed in May of 2004 (as “Oklahoma Committee for Conscientious Objectors”) and determined to pursue two related objectives:

• to provide support for those who refuse military service/conscription or seek to get out of the military on CO grounds, and
• to counter military recruitment, especially in the schools, with information, alternative options, and other resources.

Projects

• Oklahoma GI Rights Hotline – Free and confidential counseling service for service members. See okgirightshotline.org
• Counter-Recruitment – Offering information about alternatives to military service, especially within communities of color, where economic injustice leads to disproportionate pressure to join the service.
• Conscience and War – Public education, especially to young people, parents and youth workers, about the development of conscience, the moral ramifications of war, and the peaceful alternatives of cooperation, community building and tolerance that create a just society that can live in peace in the global family.
